4 Benefits of an Organized, Clutter-Free Home in Achieving New Year’s Resolutions

It’s resolution season! Do you set resolutions? Personally, I prefer setting goals for what I’d like to accomplish in the new year. Goals involve establishing daily, weekly, and monthly practices to help achieve them. Below, I’ll discuss the benefits of organizing your home, ensuring that your mind is free from clutter, chaos, and confusion.

Benefit #1: Organization Claims Control and Calms the Chaos

Yep, I love an organized home!  My family often hears me say, “A cluttered home leads to a cluttered mind.” I truly believe this. When you walk into a disorganized home, you are immediately busy doing the dishes and cleaning up the kid’s toys. Now envision walking into a home where everything has a place and a routine to keep it that way. When you enter your home, you have a place to hang your coat and put your shoes away (behind closed doors so the visual chaos is unseen). Then you have a spot to put your mail where you can address it at a later time. There really isn’t much to “tackle.”

That feels amazing and gives your mind space to think or just be present with the ones you love…it gives you time. This is why I’m so passionate about understanding the routines and needs of the clients I work with. It is only then that I can design custom ideas that support their lives and make them more efficient and easy!

Benefit #2: Great Design Makes Room for Mindfulness

What does mindfulness mean to you? Is it having the capacity to be present because your calendar is well scheduled and you know what time is actually free? Is it taking time to hike with a friend or meditate daily?

I love it when my clients bring me into a project that I know will improve their well-being. I recently designed a yoga and meditation room (pictures coming this summer). We created custom walnut storage to hide all the yoga props, laid a soft textural rug for sound absorbency, gave life to the room with plants, and, of course, put all the lights on dimmers. What routine or space can you incorporate into the New Year to create new habits that stick?

Benefit #3: Organization Boosts Physical Activity

When your home is organized, it’s easier to find the time for your favorite activity. Maybe you love going skiing when the snow starts to fly, but your boots are in the basement, your skis are in the garage, and where are your gloves?!

Now imagine you had a place in your garage where you switched out seasonal items (camping gear for the summer and ski gear for the winter). All your ski gear is ready to load from the garage, it takes you minutes and because it’s always there, you don’t have to worry that you’ve forgotten anything. Creating new habits is not always easy. The best way to engrain new habits is by implementing them little by little.

  • Learn to time block your day for things other than work.
  • Schedule time in your calendar to have the carpet cleaned or time to organize a child’s room, or clean out and organize the garage so you can actually park a car inside (which saves you time by not scraping snow off in the brutal cold).
  • Schedule time for yourself to workout or go for a hike.

Remember, the key to achieving a goal is to break it down into daily, weekly, and monthly practices and organize your home around this so it’s easy to do (like grabbing that pre-packed workout bag). If the whole process seems overwhelming to you, commit to just 15 minutes a day. Set a timer for 15 minutes and get going. You will be amazed at what you can accomplish in such a short amount of time.

Do you have a question about how we can help you get organized for peaceful, vibrant living? Just ask!

Warmly,

Dawn
