That distinct scent of a new rug, book, or candle can feel exciting, hinting at “new,” yet it often signals volatile organic compounds (VOCs) releasing into your home, a process called off-gassing. VOCs are chemicals that easily evaporate at room temperature. While not all are harmful, many contribute to poor indoor air quality and long-term health concerns especially in today’s tightly sealed homes. Specifying low-VOC products may add a small cost upfront, but protecting your family’s well-being should be top of mind.
Strategy #1: Source Furniture with Natural Materials
Furnishings and finishes naturally release VOCs over time, but not all are created equal. I source furniture, fixtures, and décor with careful attention to natural materials, formaldehyde-free adhesives, and toxin-free certifications to ensure they won’t compromise your home’s air quality.
Often, I encourage clients to reupholster a stunning vintage piece or invest in artisan-made furniture with natural fabrics, curated choices that combine beauty, sustainability, and health.
Strategy #2: Pick the Least Harmful Paint & Primer
Paint is one of the most common sources of VOCs, both while drying and long after. That’s why I recommend Benjamin Moore’s low and no-VOC lines, or the rich, artisanal texture of American Clay. Both options deliver elevated finishes without compromising your air. With many sophisticated color options, and American Clay having a subtle texture, healthier walls are an easy place to begin.
Strategy #3: Flooring That Breathes Luxury
Flooring sets the foundation for your home both aesthetically and environmentally. Real wood is often the healthier choice, while many lower-end engineered options rely on plastics (LVP) or adhesives containing formaldehyde. By investing in natural, durable flooring, you gain a surface that’s not only timeless in style but also supportive of your health.
Strategy #4: Aim for a Space with Good Quality Air
Breathing clean, fresh air at home should feel as refined as the spaces you live in. Whole-house recirculation fans are a discreet yet powerful way to continually refresh your environment, and I’m seeing these installed more and more. Select finishes that actively purify rather than pollute, and consider the elegance of live plants, which act as natural air purifiers while enhancing your interiors. Wellness at home isn’t just about aesthetics it’s also about the invisible luxury of truly clean air that supports a healthy lifestyle.
Being mindful of VOCs and toxins is the first step toward creating a healthier, more harmonious home. This is a passion of mine, helping clients design interiors that are not only stunning but also supportive of their family’s well-being. Because true luxury isn’t just what you see, it’s what you breathe.
