What are luxury textiles, and why are they essential? As with everything, different people will define this differently. Some might say that luxury textiles come from Italy or France, while others emphasize that they are natural or sustainably produced. I lean toward the latter, preferring my interiors to be as free from toxins as possible.
Fabrics with diverse compositions, patterns, and textures engage the senses and transform spaces visually and physically. Here are 4 textiles that are sure to elevate your home…
Textile #1: Vibrant Velvet for Touch and Texture
Velvet is one of my favorite textures to use in a space. It’s cozy, feels luxurious, and adds a nice texture. I typically use velvet for sofas or accents with other fabrics, as it feels good to snuggle into.
Textile #2: Layered Linen for Elegance and Comfort
Linen has a beautiful texture that flows gracefully in a summer breeze. It strikes the perfect balance between being casual and elegant—crisp yet comfortable. I love using linen for pillows, bedding, and window treatments. However, due to Colorado’s intense sun exposure, I often prefer a linen-cotton blend to help it withstand the harsh rays and increase its durability.
Textile #3: Luxurious Leather for Durability and Style
Leather is not my go-to fabric, but in small accents, it provides a texture that can go from worn and rustic to sleek and modern. While leather is not my favorite for sofas (too cold and slippery), I do love it on a small side chair or dining chair for easy cleanability.
Textile #4: Cozy Wool for Softness & Sophistication
Wool feels classy. As drapery, it hangs beautifully and has clean lines that lend itself to modern design. It can feel masculine and fits well into a study or living room. I prefer wool on drapery, rugs, and accessories as it can feel itchy on a sofa.
Mixing textures with the luxury textiles we talked about above is a great way to give a room visual interest. When I’m working on a space, fabrics are usually one of the first design decisions made. Having these pulled early on in a project gives the client a visual of what the space will look like and the color direction we will take it. Clients also love to touch and feel the quality of these textiles as they help to bring the conceptual design into reality.
