Let’s be honest, life with kids and pets is messy. From muddy paws and sticky fingers to sports gear and rainy-day chaos, your home’s materials are constantly put to the test. That’s why one of the first things we ask new clients is whether they have kids or pets. It helps us determine what finishes will hold up to everyday wear, and still look beautiful doing it.
Today, we’re sharing 3 finishes that withstands kids, pets, and everyday messes…
Finish #1: High-Quality, Functional Flooring
Durable flooring is essential, especially in high-traffic areas like entries and mudrooms. For these spaces, we love specifying large-format porcelain tile in mudrooms, it’s incredibly easy to clean and stands up well to dirt and moisture. For main entries, hardwood or tile paired with a wool rug offers a timeless look with practical benefits.
And speaking of wool rugs, don’t be afraid of them! Wool is naturally stain-resistant thanks to the lanolin in its fibers, making it a great, low-maintenance option that also supports healthy indoor air quality.
We’re often asked about Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) because it’s marketed as kid- and pet- friendly. While LVP may seem convenient, we don’t typically recommend it. It’s still plastic, and while it’s durable, it doesn’t offer the richness, warmth, or sustainability of natural materials. We prefer finishes like real wood (which can be refinished) and wool carpets (which can be cleaned) to keep your home feeling elevated while avoiding unnecessary plastics.
Finish #2: Performance Fabric for Upholstered Pieces
Choosing upholstery fabrics with kids and pets in mind doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style. We often recommend patterned or textured fabrics to help disguise minor stains. For added protection, performance fabrics like Crypton can be a smart choice. Crypton is engineered to repel moisture, stains, and odors, and importantly, many options are now PFAS-free.
We also look for fabrics with high rub counts (originally designed for commercial use), which are tough enough to stand up to daily use, whether that means enthusiastic pets or active little ones.
Finish #3: Durable Everyday Surfaces
Don’t overlook other surfaces that take a beating. Countertops in kids’ bathrooms, for example, need to withstand toothpaste smears and spills. Porcelain or quartz countertops are great options here for their durability and easy maintenance.
Paint finishes also make a difference. We suggest a satin finish on walls for easier wipe-downs and a semi-gloss on trim and doors to handle frequent cleaning without dulling over time.
Balancing beauty and function is absolutely possible, you just need the right guidance. With thoughtful material selection, your home can handle the realities of daily life while still feeling refined and well-designed.
