How We Strategically Mix Patterns for a One-of-a-Kind Space

Painting walls and buying retail furniture is easy because they mainly come in solid colors. Both are fine (albeit a bit boring), but if you want to elevate the look of your home, one easy way to do so is by layering patterns on your furniture, rugs, and window coverings. This isn’t as easy as it may seem, but we’ll walk you through five easy steps to achieve a more sophisticated look in your home.

Step #1: Define Your Curated Color Palette

The first step is defining a color palette.  We do this based on your existing pieces or by asking questions about colors you love.

Step #2: Decide on the Design Bridge Element

Do you have a gorgeous rug that you bought on one of your trips abroad or a special accent piece that makes you smile whenever you look at it? We will use this as our “design bridge” to unite all the elements. We’ll pull out colors, textures, and any other inspiration to curate your unique room.

The bridge piece in this dining room was a large silk print we framed for the client.

Step #3: Source Items in an Assortment of Scales

Scale is the most critical factor when layering different patterns. The patterns can’t be too similar in size; otherwise, the eye is overwhelmed, and it won’t work. An example could be using a small scale on the sofa with a large print on the drapery.

Step #4: Test the Design Using Samples and Renderings

It can feel overwhelming to think of multiple patterns in a room, and it can be hard to imagine how a small swatch will look when full-sized. That is why we utilize samples and renderings of your space so you can see what it will look like and feel confident in the design direction.

Step #5: Incorporate it All for an Exciting Install Day

You’ll be amazed on install day when you see how everything flows and how adding those patterns and details can really elevate your room! And because we get to know you and what you love, your new space will immediately feel like home. Don’t be afraid of mixing patterns. It makes your space more interesting and one-of-a-kind.
