As we wrap up my 20th year in business, I wanted to share some lessons I’ve learned over the years and how they have gotten me to where I am today, specializing in everything from sustainable remodeling and new builds to custom furnishings.
Learning to say “No”
The most transformational lesson I have gained is learning to say “no” to projects that aren’t a good fit. This is NOT easy as in this business, the ebb and flows can be vast and you don’t always know when that next project will land. However, I’d rather be ready for those perfect projects than be slammed with smaller ones that don’t leave space for what I really want.
The Importance of Client Chemistry
Getting to know each client is invaluable. The right chemistry between the designer and client has to be there because remodeling a home is deeply personal. If I don’t understand how you like to cook (or hate cooking) in the kitchen, it greatly changes the layout and design focus. So whether I’m your designer or not, make sure it’s a great connection because projects are often 1-2 years long so we’ll be seeing a lot of each other!
Budgeting Sets the Stage for Success
Getting clear on a project is a top priority for me. None of us wants to waste time designing the perfect home, only to realize way too late that it actually doesn’t fit within your budget. Although talking about money is not easy for everyone, if you aren’t clear upfront about what you can spend, you’ll just waste money trying to figure that out. I can easily design around a budget if I know it upfront, so I appreciate the frankness around financials on a project.
Embracing Murphy’s Law
You can plan everything perfectly but regardless, something will likely come up during construction. I provide a creative problem-solving perspective that will get you through any bumps that occur. And it’s not just me, having a great team where everyone collaborates and communicates makes these situations a non-issue.
Over the past 20 years, I have worked diligently to refine my processes, drawing from my experiences to make each project more seamless and efficient. I’m proud of the knowledge I’ve gained from every endeavor and would be delighted to collaborate with you on your next project—or even just to discuss the process of remodeling or building a new home.
My focus is on designing personalized, functional spaces that cater to the needs of busy families. I take pride in handling all the details, allowing my clients to relax and truly enjoy the experience of creating their dream home.
