Custom cabinets are one of the most important features of your home. By going custom, you can incorporate details and functionality that make custom, luxury homes stand out.
The kitchen is where people naturally gather, whether it’s a casual family night or hosting friends, so it’s important to design around this focal point of your home. The primary bathroom is a sanctuary for you as the homeowner. The right cabinet layout doesn’t just look beautiful, it supports how you move through your day, keeping everything within reach and making life feel more effortless and efficient which is why I strongly support going custom in these two spaces.
Cabinetry needs to work hard behind the scenes, offering intuitive storage and allowing a smooth workflow. Investing in custom cabinetry allows us to tailor the function and the finish, ensuring your cabinetry works just as beautifully as it looks.
Cabinet Box Basics
The cabinet box is the structural body of each cabinet, the hidden framework that holds everything together. With custom cabinetry, you can select premium materials like plywood or engineered wood for durability, and specify box depth, reinforcement, and shelf adjustability based on how you’ll use each unit. While the box isn’t typically visible, how it’s built has a direct impact on longevity, weight capacity, and daily performance.
The Fundamentals of Fashioning the Door and Frame
The cabinet frame is the front-facing portion of the cabinet box that doors are mounted to and its design can be either framed (traditional look) or frameless (modern and sleek). Framed cabinets often suit classic, transitional, or cottage-style homes, while frameless styles lean more contemporary or European. Frameless cabinets are typically what we specify for the kitchens we design but we also love the look of a framed door.
Cabinet doors are where aesthetics come to life. From clean shaker styles to ornate raised panels, or even sleek slab fronts, every choice impacts the room’s tone. We help clients select finishes, wood species, hardware etc. Every element is considered for balance, personality, and cohesion with the overall home.
The Details of Drawer Construction
Quality drawers are where craftsmanship becomes obvious. Dovetail drawer joints are the gold standard, not just for their strength, but for their beauty and durability over time. They resist pulling apart and can handle heavy daily use, making them a must for high-end kitchens and baths. We typically specify dovetail drawers in all of our homes but if cost becomes an issue, we will only specify dovetail in the most used rooms; kitchen, laundry, and primary bath and we will specify glue-and-dowel or butt-style joints in the secondary rooms.
Consider the amount of organization each drawer needs and add custom inserts to make them more functional and easy to find your favorite cooking tool.
For clients designing or remodeling luxury homes, it’s the details that matter most. Consider features like integrated lighting, soft-close mechanisms, hidden outlets, or interior organizers that keep even the unseen elements elevated. Don’t forget how cabinetry ties into overall architecture and millwork details. Hiring a professional that can bring all of the custom details to life in a way that feels cohesive, personal, and luxurious is key to making everything come together.
