Reupholster or Replace? 3 Key Questions to Ask Yourself…

You love the sofa that was handed down from your grandmother, but it’s starting to sag and look frumpy, not the look you’re going for! You’re probably wondering if you should reupholster it or give it away.

Today’s blog is all about knowing if it’s worth the expense and provides a quick guide to the costs involved.

#1: Do You Truly Love This Piece?

Before deciding whether to reupholster a piece of furniture, ask yourself: Does it hold sentimental value, making it irreplaceable? Is it a piece you truly love and want to keep in your space? And most importantly, are you willing to invest in the necessary repairs—fabric, cushions, and structure—to restore it to its full potential? If you answered yes, it’s definitely worth exploring the cost to make it new again.

#2: Is the Frame Sturdy and Well-Made?

If the frame is sturdy and in good condition, updating the fabric and suspension can give your furniture a fresh look and extend its lifespan for years to come. However, if the frame is weak or damaged, investing in a new piece may be the better option. For durability, consider furniture with kiln-dried hardwood frames, as they offer superior strength and longevity.

#3: Was It Comfortable Before?

If your sofa or chair was never comfortable to begin with, reupholstering won’t magically make it better. However, if it used to be one of the coziest spots in your home, repairing the suspension and replacing the cushions can bring back that familiar comfort. In that case, reupholstering can be a worthwhile investment to restore both style and coziness.

Reupholstering is not always the cheapest option unless it’s a quality piece. Here’s some quick math to give you a sense of cost: Upholstery fabric averages $80-$100 per yard, and most club chairs need 6-8 yards (depending on repeat) of fabric. You’re looking at $480-$800 for the fabric. Labor costs vary based on the amount of repairs to the frame, but I’d say an average starting point is $900-$1,300. So, all in, you could be spending $1,380 – $2,100.

While it’s sometimes easier and cheaper to buy new, reupholstering a piece brings character and history to your interior space. Not to mention that you are keeping furniture out of the landfill. FYI, most furniture you purchase at retail stores is NOT worth the cost of reupholstering because the bones are not well-made. I always encourage investing in quality furniture that is timeless and can be passed down for generations.
