The Story Behind Paradigm (I’ve ALWAYS Loved Design!)

Since I’m about to launch many exciting changes at Paradigm I thought it might be fun to see how it all came about…

As a child, I was always rearranging my room and “decorating” it. I even drew floor plans, some even considering mechanical spaces. Total design nerd.

In high school, I was part of a “School-to-Work” program where I was able to shadow a husband and wife team in Billings, MT. He was the architect and she was the designer with her own boutique. I was able to work in both offices and loved it all! I realized quickly that I didn’t want to deal with some components of architecture so pursued interior design, which was not offered in Montana so that was my way out. I graduated in May 1998 and started school in July 1998. I completed the 4-year program in 3 years because I wanted to work! While in school I worked at the high-end tile showroom, Ann Sacks, where I learned the details of plumbing and tile – so invaluable! From there I met a designer that needed assistance and worked with her for 3 years, often running the business while she went out of the country. This gave me insight into how to run a design firm. After the three years, realizing I’d never design my own projects, it was time to spread my wings. I created Paradigm in 2004 and haven’t looked back. In 2008, I was working in Denver and NYC. By 2010, I had moved to NYC permanently. I worked at establishing projects in NYC while continuing to work in Denver but eventually things slowed.

I have always loved furniture and building things so in 2012-13 I started taking woodworking classes at the now gone, 3rd Ward in Brooklyn. I LOVED it. I met a wonderful set of skilled furniture makers who continued to take me under their wing to learn. I built a few projects for clients but then realized we were going to start our family…so it was time to get out of the woodshop. I also had a humbling realization that I would never be as good as I wanted to be at building furniture anytime soon… I have such respect for furniture designers. In 2013 we started our family. In 2017 when we realized we were about to have our 3rd child, we decided it was time to leave the city to be near family and let our kids run out their endless energy outside … in grass and mountains, not running over people on the streets of New York with their scooters.

We found a home (take a look at our project!) near the Foothills and completely gutted it down to the studs. We did this in 9 months, while being super sleep deprived from a newborn, managing all the contractors. So, if you need someone to keep your project on track, I’m your girl! I will share pictures of our completed home early next year.

I wanted to be able to walk out our door to hike and we are so lucky to have that. I’m continuously inspired, like my early years in Montana, by the textures and patterns that nature overlaps.

So here we are 15 years after I opened Paradigm, back in Colorado. Making new connections, designing amazing new spaces. In 2020 I will re-brand to celebrate all that is new. I am forever grateful for all the clients that have stayed with me through the years of growing, I couldn’t have done this without you! I can’t wait to share the exciting new look for Paradigm along with so many new offerings. Because I love creating a home that tells your story!
